Quinta dos Currais is a wine-producing estate located in the heart of Cova da Beira, between the Gardunha and Estrela mountain ranges, in the parish of Capinha, municipality of Fundão. Founded with the aim of valuing the winegrowing heritage of Beira Interior, it combines tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for the land.
Set within a 130-hectare property that includes woodland and olive groves, the vineyard occupies 30 hectares, planted in 1996 with indigenous grape varieties well adapted to the region, such as Arinto, Síria, Fonte Cal, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen, Rufete, and Castelão in the older plots. The north–south exposure and schist soils provide the grapes with exceptional conditions for producing wines of identity and elegance.
The winery, built from the ground up, is equipped with modern oenological technology, including a temperature control system, an in-house laboratory, and a bottling and labelling line. Nevertheless, the harvest remains manual, preserving both quality and the traditional connection to the vineyard’s cycle. All production uses only estate-grown grapes, ensuring full traceability and consistency.

With an average annual production of 180,000 litres of red wine and 30,000 litres of white, Quinta dos Currais has earned both national and international recognition, collecting numerous awards in prestigious competitions. The range includes Red, Red Reserva, Selected Harvest White, and Síria, each offering an exceptional balance of quality and value.
The estate’s most distinguished accolade arrived in 2025, when the TALABARA Premium Edition DOC Beira Interior Red 2019 was named one of the 30 Best Wines of Portugal by Revista de Vinhos, during its “Best of the Year 2024” awards ceremony. This exclusive edition stood out as the only wine from Beira Interior to feature in the demanding Top 30 Excellence, sharing the spotlight with national icons such as Barca Velha 2015 and Pêra Manca 2018.
First launched in 2011, the TALABARA Premium Edition represents the pinnacle of the estate’s craftsmanship. Produced exclusively from Touriga Nacional grapes grown on an elevated plot beside the winery, it reflects a meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking aimed at expressing the true essence of the Quinta’s terroir. The 2019 vintage stands as the culmination of this continuous and ambitious pursuit of excellence.
According to José Virgílio Soares, the new owner of Quinta:
“This distinction reinforces both the continuity and the quality of the wines produced at Quinta dos Currais. It proves that Beira Interior has everything it takes to stand alongside the very best in Portugal. Our connection to this project goes back more than twenty years in the commercial field, and it was with complete confidence that we decided to move forward with its acquisition — preserving its family spirit and the exclusive production from our own 30 hectares of vineyards.”
The Soares family, with over four decades of experience in the wine and spirits industry through their companies Sogarrafas (regional distribution) and Viniparra (national and international trade), has played a key role in the development of Quinta dos Currais since its early days. The family was responsible for introducing the brand to the market in 2002 and for ensuring its consistent presence ever since, contributing decisively to its recognition and success.

In 2024, the Soares family completed the acquisition of Quinta dos Currais, marking the beginning of a new chapter as owners of a project they have long supported. This next phase represents the strengthening of a long-standing commitment, with renewed ambition and a strategic vision focused on enhancing the Beira Interior region and expanding internationally.
The winery’s technical management remains under the direction of Eng. Manuel Rodrigues, involved in the project since its inception, with the consultancy of Eng. Carlos Silva, the winemaker responsible for the ongoing supervision of the vineyards and production.
Looking ahead, the estate’s strategy is built on the continuous promotion of traditional grape varieties, the selective introduction of new cultivars, and the reinforcement of its international presence — always with a focus on the authenticity of the Beira Interior terroir and the trust of the consumers who have supported the estate from the very beginning.
